Sport in Catford – Football
The Mount the south west corner of Mountsfield Park was a 50,000 capacity stadium that for decades in the early 20th century was home to Catford Southend FC and rather more briefly (the 23/24 season) Charlton Athletic. There was even a move to merge the two sides which was blocked by the football league.
Catford Southend played in light and dark blue vertical stripes and were nicknamed the Kittens and played in a variety of local leagues including Bromley and the London League in 1903 which was at the time the top one for London sides. However for most of their existence they were part of more local amateur leagues except for a brief period in mid 1920s when they turned professional. This may have been a case of overreaching as by 1927 they ceased to be able to fulfil their fixture list and the club closed.
