Elsa Lanchester
Best known for her role in “Bride of Frankenstein” with Peckham born Boris Karloff Elsa Lancaster was born in Lewisham in 1902, studied dance in Paris, and moved back to Hollywood in the 1930s. She starred in dozens of films with her last being in 1980, received Academy Award nominations, and died in 1986, aged 84, her ashes scattered over the Pacific Ocean. Like her parents and husband, the actor Charles Laughton, Elsa gave her support to left-wing causes.
